Major League Baseball unveiled hats and jerseys that will be worn during the inaugural Players Weekend from Aug. 25 to Aug. 27. Players Weekend pays tribute to all levels of baseball, from Little League to the Major Leagues. As part of the weekend, big leaguers will be wearing hats and pullover jerseys that look like what Little Leaguers would wear.
For the most part, the hats and jerseys are a fun, refreshing look. The majority of schemes have taken the standard, bold colors and switched them out for pastels. Since I’m a hat guy, let’s start there today.
The teams going with blue hats are the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Miami Marlins, Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, and LA Dodgers. Aside from the Marlins and Astros, the others have opted with secondary logos. I feel like going with the alternate logo is a refreshing change from the everyday look. The cleanest look of this bunch goes to the Blue Jays, with their red maple leaf logo. The maple leaf pops against the blue background and makes for a sharp hat.
In the largest group of all, we have the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Anaheim Angels, Washington Nationals, and Minnesota Twins. Most teams went with their standard logo, but I appreciate that the Diamondbacks went with the alternate snake logo. The best looks of this group belong to the White Sox and Twins. Chicago used a black, retro Sox logo that looks crisp against the red. The Twins stuck with the standard TC logo, but it’s in front of a white field then shaped like Minnesota.
It might be more of a pineapple, but the Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, and Oakland A’s are the few in this group. I’m usually one for a pirate logo, but I feel like this was a swing and a miss, as Pittsburgh should have used the pirate with crossed bats. Tampa Bay used a blue sunburst logo, which goes well with the yellow and feels like Florida and summer.
The Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets all went with the ghastly orange. I’ll be honest, I don’t like any of these hats. The Giants looks the best, because it’s closest to normal with a black bill to distract from the orange, but the Tigers hat looks like a generic logo. Make more of an effort here.
There are two teams here. The Colorado Rockies went purple with the secondary mountain and baseball logo. It’s a nice look, especially with the change from the standard CR. The New York Yankees went simple gray with a black NY. It looks like a batting practice hat and it’s boring. This is a hat that I feel like has been available at Lids for years. Let’s spice things up a little bit New York.
